Innovation in Cosmetics
April, 2012

"Where does innovation start?" is a question that should be of interest to everyone in the SpecialChem Community because it involves almost everyone. And the results are probably what everyone expected even though I expected many more responses to this question. But more than half of the people who responded to this question (almost a full 60%) did believe that innovation starts with the creative mind, as it most certainly should. Product innovation comes directly from the mind and mainly from the formulator who takes latest ingredients and then creates a novel product based on an idea that came from the marketing department. Everything else plays just a very small and insignificant roll in this process.

	March, 2012 - Sustainability is the Most Important Factor While Designing a Greener Cosmetic Product "What is the most important factor while designing a greener cosmetic product ?" question is for those who must launch a sustainable cosmetic product that is good for the environment, is energy efficient while manufacturing it, and is totally biodegradable from the first ingredient which are available in most markets at reasonable cost to the final package it comes in. While all the responses fit this one statement, which of these responses is the most important to the cosmetic formulator? While the question may not fit all the formulators in the SpecialChem Community, it will still be interesting to see how formulators view each of the responses.

	February, 2012 - Majority of Cosmetics Formulators Prefer Less than 15 Ingredients to Formulate a Successful Product The answer to the question "How many ingredients do you use in a formulation before you are satisfied with its performance?" can vary greatly. It depends on the company you come from, how you position your product, and any cost constraints placed on your formulation. You can put many ingredients in your formulation to make the label look extravagant. Some consumers think that the more ingredients in a formulation, some being fairly exotic with names that are almost unpronounceable, the better the product and the more it will do for them. And some consumers even understand that this is what makes the cost of some products so high. But we are talking about product performance and how many ingredients it takes to get there.

	January, 2012 - Ingredient Regulations: The Most Considered Factor before Formulating for Foreign Markets "How difficult is it for you to formulate for foreign markets?" question should impact every cosmetic formulator because most they all eventually have to create products for a global market where many regulations and ingredient availability and sources, among other things, may be different. So this important question was recently posed to the SpecialChem Community and here is how our members responded. I would have figured that this question would have had more responses from the Community than it did. Some companies do not even launch products in foreign markets. That could be one good reason for what I feel is a surprisingly low number of responses.

	December, 2011 - Switching Suppliers for Alternate-sourced Ingredients "Are you comfortable switching suppliers for alternate-sourced ingredients?" question should be on the mind of each and every formulator. It is on mine anyway. On numerous occasions I have received samples of the same ingredient from different suppliers and I see some differences between them. One of the most obvious differences was color. When an ingredient is supposed to be water-white, it definitely should not be yellow. Even if the ingredient is exactly the same chemically, its color may still have an impact on the final product. So there always is this question about alternate sourcing from different suppliers. But what does the SpecialChem Community think?

	November, 2011 - Value of an Ingredient Supplier The September question on "Value from an Ingredient Supplier" is not as easy to answer as it sounds. How does one define "value" both at the supplier side and the receiving customer side? As noted in the results, it appears clear that 188 voters think that "ideas to innovate" and "formulation support" are two major requirements to be delivered by the ingredient suppliers to demonstrate value (this is unchanged from the same click 'n' vote question in June 2009.

	October, 2011 - Analyzing the Most Challenging Factor While Developing High SPF Formulations The Click'n'Vote - 'What is the most challenging factor when developing high SPF formulations?' - question was in itself a bit more challenging than some of the questions posed to the SpecialChem Community in the past. The reason for this is that it is sometimes difficult to achieve a high SPF without taking all these factors into consideration, especially with the latest FDA sunscreen regulations that just went into effect this past June. But this is how the Community responded to this challenging question - and it was a fairly large response. My comments are based on the most popular response down to the least popular response even though in this case all the responses should be considered when formulating any OTC product.

	September, 2011 - Retired Population Segment to Lead Highest Cosmetic Market Value in the Next 3 Years This topic was probably one of the most challenging for the SpecialChem Community to respond to. This is a very tough question to answer but I noticed that quite a bit of people responded so they must think the question 'Which population segment given below should lead to the highest market value rise in the coming 3 years?' has some impact in the future of the industry. From the responses below, and separation of the voting, the respondents seem to know pretty well where the industry may be headed in the coming 3 years.
