Process optimisation for making stable emulsions using accelerated dispersion analysis by multisample analytical centrifugation

S. Küchler, C. Schneider, Prof. D. Lerche & Dr T. Sobisch - Nov 6, 2006

This technique allows the separation process to be measured rapidly and thus gives the user a fast and accurate means of evaluating emulsion dispersion stabilities1. The LUMiFuge stability analyser [Figure 2] is an analytical centrifugation system that measures the intensity of transmitted NIR light in a sample being centrifuged. Using STEP-technology (Space and Time Extinction Profiles), the sample is measured simultaneously over its full sample length as a function of time All data are stored and displayed in real time as a function of both radial position and time, thus enabling accurate and precise analysis at the micron level of any changes in the dispersion characteristics. Up to 8 samples can be analysed simultaneously. The separation behaviour of individual samples can be compared and measured in detail by analysing the changes in light transmission at any part of the sample or by following the movement of any phase boundary. With the LUMiFuge both these calculations are performed semiautomatically.
