The retail landscape in North America is going through a seismic shift. Bricks & mortar retailers continue to consolidate, close doors, reinvent themselves and explore other channels. Retail is now controlled by the consumer. She has evolved into a savvy, sophisticated, discerning shopper. She calls the shots.The internet has redefined the consumer relationship with products. While the economic downturn has affected all channels, it’s impacted the internet less.Direct response television has also surfaced as a valid player in the retail industry. Formerly the venue for grills, jewelry and electronics, high end marketing companies are standing in line for prime time placement.
New concept stores, pop ups and entrepreneurial specialty stores are sprouting up quickly. Small enough to keep overhead low, remain nimble and focused on the consumer, they are the retailers to watch.
