The new generation of UV filters: reliable all-round protection for the whole day
- Industry News
Sunscreen? For a long time this meant nothing more than protection against sunburn, which is caused by part of the sun’s ultraviolet rays known as short-wave UVB radiation. Long-wave UVA radiation, which accounts for 90 percent of the UV light that reaches the earth, was always thought to be harmless. But now we know that it also affects the skin: among other things, it causes the skin to age prematurely, a process known as photoaging. The characteristic signs include wrinkle formation, decreased elasticity of the skin, pigment spots and lowering of the body’s immune function. Since the body gives no warning of excess UVA radiation, as it does for UVB radiation by developing sunburn, the effects accumulate unnoticed and only become apparent after years.

- Product News
Van Reeth notes, "In formulations that contain organic sunscreens (e.g., octinoxate, octisalate and avobenzone), stearyl dimethicone (a soft AMS wax that melts on contact with skin) works best. The addition of stearyl dimethicone in a prototype oil-in-water sun care lotion allowed a reduction in the quantity of UVB sunscreen from 11% to 6 % to achieve the same SPF value."

Sunscreen Product Utilizes Chelators for Protection
- Product News
According to Dr. Dennis Gross, creator of the MD Skincare line, Powerful Sun Protection SPF 30 Lotion Spray, its newest format, and Powerful Sun Protection SPF 30 Packettes, in the same formulation, add new innovation to preventing sun damage. "Heavy metals, particularly iron and copper, are found in tap water, sweat and on skin. The metals are free radicals themselves, but the presence of sunlight can energize them further to cause DNA mutation implicated in skin cancer, wrinkling and skin aging. The chelating complex in this product helps counteract this mechanism," says Dr. Gross. In the product, chelators are said to bind with the iron particles and sequester them from the skin to reduce DNA mutations and collagen breakdown. In addition to the iron-encapsulating chelator, the product also contains lycopenes to diminish damage from the sun's free radicals. Green Tea extract to help reverse sun damage and powerful antioxidants such as Vitamins a, C and E to provide broad-spectrum sun protection.

Ingredient News from Cognis Care Chemicals
- Industry News
According to Cognis it is essential to consider the performance criteria of the cosmetic ingredients used, when developing modern sun care products, as many raw materials show synergistic effects. "With Care Chemicals' multifunctional raw materials formulations may be improved, e.g., by enhancing the efficacy of the UV filters, increasing the stability of emulsions, and optimizing costs," according to the company. The choice of the emollient is the key to any sun care formulation and sunscreen solubility and SPF can be enhanced by selecting the right product. "A key ingredient in this respect is Celtiol CC, a fast and easy spreading emollient that creates a dry, velvety feel on the skin," according to the company. It is said to be suitable for sun protection applications because of its solubilizing capacity for crystalline UV filters as well as its dispersing properties for pigments.
