Colorants Used in the Japanese Market
by Nick Morante
Natural colorants are slowly replacing synthetic dyes and lakes in the Japanese cosmetics and personal care market as they are in the European Union. by Nick Morante
Photochromic pigments change with the amount of UV light or direct sunlight that they are exposed to. They are based on inorganic pigments, or basic Iron Oxides that appear pale pink in masstone. The color change exhibited is mild, to the blue side or to the yellow side depending on the pigment. The mechanism of action for these pigments is the linear arrangement of the pigment particles.

Photonic Makeup that Mimics Real Life Visual Effects
by Nick Morante
It has been suggested to me that photonics could be used to create makeup, photonic makeup that mimics the colors on a butterfly's wings. A product which would contain little or no colorants could emit color and match the skin perfectly. This is because the natural world produces colors from seemingly transparent substances. We must first understand what photonics is and how does it apply in this particular application...

by Nick Morante
The Dye industry before English chemist William Henry Perkin prepared his synthetic mauve dye, that was an aniline purple from coal tar chemicals, was quite colorful (no pun intended). It involved the Orient, Europe, and Colonial America, the introduction of Cochineal (carmine red), Turkey red and dyewoods into Europe and the first semi-synthetic dyes, picric acid and murexide. The structure of the dye industry in the 1840’s was also greatly influenced...

Decorative Cosmetics - Trends for 2007
by Nick Morante
Decorative Cosmetics will remain a big mover in the beauty industry in 2007. Would you believe that the Ancient Egyptians and Romans used cosmetics containing mercury compounds? Mercury and some of the other materials they used in products to beautify themselves are, in today's market, considered hazardous and unsafe for human use or consumption.

Optical Effects in Cosmetics
by Patricia Lemann
When light shines on the face, some of the light is absorbed and the remainder is reflected by the skin. Applying a cosmetic product to the face changes the reflection/diffusion of the light which results in, for example, a new color, a new skin tone, or a special radiance, greater shine or luminosity.
